Scientists Turn Escherichia coli Bacteria into Mercury Sensor
• Researchers from Imperial College London and Zhejiang University have developed a self-powered chemical sensor using genetically engineered bacteria.
• The sensor interfaces directly with electronics, enabling the creation of cheap and programmable bioelectronic devices.
• Traditional biosensors, based on enzymes, are fragile, costly, and slow in complex environments.
• The researchers developed a modular biosensor that senses the presence of specific compounds and converts that into an electrical signal compatible with low-cost electronics.
• The biosensors were built using genetically engineered Escherichia coli bacteria as ‘containers’.
• The sensors detected two types of compounds: arabinose and mercury ions in water.
• The researchers added a genetic amplifier to the E. coli, triggering the production of a polymerase that triggered the phenazine production pathway.
• The team demonstrated an ‘AND’ logic gate inside the E. coli, producing a signal only when two specific molecules were present together.
