Plastics Treaty Draft Rifts
• Majority of countries express disappointment with the draft plastics treaty, which does away with a key demand for countries to limit plastic production.
• The current version favors a minority bloc, including several Arab states and India, advocating for addressing plastic pollution without production cuts.
• Kuwait has largely approving of the text, while about 80 member states express disapproval.
• Independent observers, including Swathi Seshadri, petrochemicals specialist, and David Azoulay, Centre for International Environmental Law, criticize the new treaty for not addressing the full life-cycle of plastics, including production, and for not mandating reuse and refill systems.
• The treaty is seen as a mockery of a three-year-long consultative process that showed broad support for an ambitious plastics treaty.
