India’s External Affairs Minister to Join Brazil-led BRICS Virtual Summit on U.S. Tariffs
• External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will represent India at a virtual summit of BRICS nations on Monday.
• The summit, convened by Brazil President Lula da Silva, will discuss tariffs imposed by the U.S.
• The summit is expected to irk the U.S. government, following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to China and discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
• Brazil has not confirmed the number of BRICS members participating in the summit and at what level.
• The summit will discuss the impact of U.S. tariffs on global trade and measures to strengthen multilateralism.
• The U.S. has imposed high tariffs on Brazil, China, South Africa, and Indonesia, with Russia and Iran being on the lowest rung of 10% tariffs.
