Gross FDI in India Reached Four-Year High in June 2025

• Gross Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) into India reached a four-year high in June 2025.

• Net FDI contracted more than 50% due to faster growth in repatriations and outward investments by Indian companies.

• Gross investments in June 2025 grew 10.5%, but outward FDI growth outpaced it, leading to a contraction in net FDI.

• Gross inflows into India stood at $9.3 billion in June 2025, a 22% increase from $7.6 billion in June 2024 and $7.2 billion in May 2025.

• Repatriation or disinvestment increased by 40.7% in June 2025 to $5.7 billion.

Eight States Propose Cess on Sin, Luxury Goods Above GST Rate

• Eight states propose a cess on sin and luxury goods above the proposed 40% GST rate.

• The cess aims to protect States’ revenues from potential revenue losses from the Centre’s rate rationalisation.

• The Centre has proposed removing 12% and 28% tax slabs and moving most items to 5% and 18%, respectively.

• A 40% rate is proposed for a few sin and luxury items.

• The Finance Ministers of these states have drafted a note outlining their concerns and proposals.
