Environment Audit Rules, 2025 Implemented by Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change
• The Environment Audit Rules, 2025 allow environmental monitoring and auditing to extend beyond State Pollution Control Boards.
• The rules will primarily scrutinize compliance with environmental regulation in industrial units.
• The existing framework is supported by the Central Pollution Control Board, Regional Offices of the Environment Ministry, and State Pollution Control Boards/Pollution Control Committees.
• The scheme aims to bridge manpower and infrastructure deficits and strengthen environmental compliance mechanisms.
• Private agencies can become accredited as auditors, evaluating compliance with environmental laws and best practices.
• Audits can also be used for compliance with ‘Green Credit Rules’, allowing individuals and organizations to earn tradeable ‘credits’ for afforestation, sustainable water management, and waste management.
• Companies will need to account for their direct and indirect carbon emissions, requiring complex accounting practices beyond Pollution Control Board officials.
• The new regime must empower district, block, and panchayat levels to address environmental travesties.
