Actress Shwetha Menon elected as first woman president of Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA)
• Actor Shwetha Menon has been elected as the first woman president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA).
• The association, established in 1994, has never had a woman as its president or general secretary.
• Menon defeated senior actor Devan to win the lead post in an electoral race held on August 15.
• She has a trusted lieutenant, actor Kukku Parameswaran, who was elected as the first woman general secretary of the association.
• The election was necessary after the previous committee led by president and actor Mohanlal stepped down on August 27, 2024, following allegations of sexual abuse and misbehaviour.
• Menon has worked in over 100 movies in Malayalam, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu, and has hosted various TV shows.
• She has faced controversies in her career, including a police complaint alleging physical misbehaviour by Congress MP N. Peethambara Kurup and a First Information Report (FIR) registered against her by the Kochi city police.
• Despite the election, Menon faces internal rifts and mud-slinging within the association, which may require her to work hard to stay afloat.
