Punjab’s Flood Crisis: Relief, Rehabilitation, and Compensation
• Punjab is facing one of its worst floods in decades, with over three lakh acres under water and 29 lives lost.
• The state’s border belt of Majha, adjoining Pakistan, has been severely affected.
• The swollen Ravi river has ravaged hundreds of villages in the border districts.
• Dams receiving water from Himachal Pradesh have been overflowing, with Ranjit Sagar and Pong dams breaching the danger level.
• The floods have been averted in previous floods in 2019 and 2023 due to delays in flood-preparedness meetings, lack of MLAs, and disputes over water release.
• The immediate priority is relief and rehabilitation, with civil society providing food and medicines.
• The bigger challenge is compensation for farmers and rebuilding lives.
• Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has requested the release of Rs 60,000 crore, calling it “Punjab’s funds withheld by the Centre.”
• Despite the crisis, villagers are sending aid and Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini promises support from neighbouring Haryana.
