Indian Broadcasters Face Crashes in License Fee Dues
• Indian TV broadcasters are owed hundreds of crores in overdue license fee payments from distributors in Nepal and Bangladesh.
• The issue has worsened over the last year, with distributors stopping paying Indian broadcasters after the ouster of former president Sheikh Hasina.
• Many Indian channels are popular in these countries, leading to a “clean feed” for distributors in Nepal.
• In Nepal, dues have exceeded ₹100 crore in the last few weeks, while Bangladeshi broadcasters owe over ₹250 crore.
• Major Indian broadcasters are hesitant to cut off links to Nepal due to the risk of pirated Indian retail feeds.
• In Nepal, Indian channels have faced government issues since April 2023, with the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology allowing broadcasters two days to implement an “à la carte” pricing system.
• In Bangladesh, Beximcom, the country’s largest conglomerate, has not received remittance clearance to pay Indian broadcasters.
